The past four weeks has convinced me that only the idea of having a temporary work visa in Quebec exists. They have guidelines and phone numbers and websites and forms about visas, but facts are fleeting and farcical. Empoi Quebec sent me to Immigrations who sent me to Service Canada who told me to call Immigrations who hung up the phone on me because they didn't have any representatives available. And even in the case that you do get a representative on the other end of the line, they don't know answers either; they're just as in the dark as we are. As much as Quebec Francophones like to think they're their own country, they actually do have to follow Canada's rules. And Canada says you must offer temporary work visas. So, on paper, you do have the right to earn one of those fine looking visas in Quebec. (Maple leaves, viridian fading to peach, overstamped with a red cutout "Canada.") But getting one is like trying to find the end of the rainbow. Except it's an ugly rainbow. And the pot of gold isn't even that big because there are no jobs here and if you're anglo, they won't hire you anyway. Anyone have suggestions on where to find under the table work that doesn't require fluency in French? I'm just all confused...ugly rainbows don't even exist.

My friend Zach and I have been listening to the Rolling Stones album Out of Our Heads a lot lately-a lifesaver after moving to Montreal-(synonym: YOU ARE UNWELCOME UNLESS FRENCH). Anyway, Out of Our Heads is my favorite Stones album right now. I love this time in the band's history...avec Brian Jones, and avant feeling inclined to hold them responsible for their sleeze and cheese. (Not that I'm not a fan of later Stones, because I am). But 60's Stones is more musically pure in a way...it's badass, it's seeds come straight from their (and my) American roots music heroes, and it sticks around with you...out in the cold rain, down underneath in the subway, all through your work day...you won't even be mad when it keeps you dancing away from sleep at night.

Once upon a time....

I squashed what could have been my prince charming

A Brain on Fire, Spreading to Phones

Two designers in Austin, Tex., have created a video game for the iPhone based on the art and music of the eccentric Texas singer and songwriter, Daniel Johnston.

Contrary to first appearances, I didn't mean for my blog to be all about Daniel Johnston. BUT. This article just came out today and I read it just now...the day after yesterday...the day after starting my blog. So I feel obligated to comment.

I bet the game is pretty cool...but...isn't there something obviously wrong with making someone else's life into a game? Especially when that "someone else" is Daniel Johnston: true genius, many people's proclaimed hero (including the makers of the video game), and someone who has been hospitalized due to his severe mental and emotional instability. I'm half expecting that they simulated the plane accident Daniel caused when he was convinced he needed to kill himself and his father because satan had entered their bodies. Crashing a plane on an ipod is one thing....crashing a plane in real life is another. It's not ironic that Daniel's character Jeramiah looks like Daniel in his drawings, but it becomes ironic when in the article, it says, "Jeremiah, [is] a boyish character who is turned into a frog in the new video game 'Hi, How Are You.'" DANIEL JOHNSTON DOESN'T DESERVE TO BE TURNED INTO A FROG! Please remember...when you play this game, you're playing with Daniel Johnston's life.
